In een antiquariaat in St Leonards-on-Sea zag ik The World Of Raymond Chandler van Barry Day liggen.
Over Ernest Hemingway
‘I suppose the weakness, even the tragedy, of writers like Hemingway is that their sort of stuff demands an immense vitality; and a man outgrows his vitality without unfortunately outgrowing his furious concern with it.’
‘Even Hemingway has let me down. I’ve been re-reading a lot of his stuff. I would have said here is a guy who writes like himself, and I would have been right, but not the way I meant it. Ninety percent of it is the goddamnest self-imitation. He never really wrote but one story. All the rest of it is the same thing in different pants – or without different pants.’
Over F. Scott Fitzgerald:
‘Nothing but the best will do for him. I think he just missed being a great writer, and the reason is pretty obvious. If the poor guy was already an alcoholic in his college days, it’s a marvel that he did as well as he did. He had one of the rarest qualities in all literature… charm.’
Over Somerset Maugham:
‘He can never make you catch your breath or lose your head, because he never loses his. I doubt that he ever wrote a line which seemed fresh from creation, and many lesser writers have. He has no magic and very little gusto. His style, which has been greatly praised, seems to me no more than a good, competent mandarin English which often only narrowly escapes dullness.’
Over de filmindustrie:
‘I wish to God Hollywood would stop trying to be significant, because when art is significant, it is always a by-product and more ar less unintentional on the part of the creator.’
‘Writers as a class I have found to be over-sensitive and spiritually undernourished. They have the egotism of actors and rarely the good looks or charm… That’s one thing I like about Hollywood. The writer is there revealed in his ultimate corruption. He asks no praise, because the praise comes to him in the form of a salary check. In Hollywood, the average writer is not young, not brave, and a bit over-dressed. But he is darn good company.’
Over schrijven
‘I do all my work on yellow paper. Sheets cut in half, typed the long way, triple spaced. The pages must be from 125 to 150 words and they are so short you don’t get prolix. If there isn’t a little meat on each, something is wrong.’
Over zichzelf:
‘My character is an unbecoming mixture of outward diffidence and inward arrogance.’
‘Something inside me has gone sour… No feelings at all was exactly right. I was as hollow as the spaces between the stars.’
‘I have lived my life on the edge of nothing.’
Enkele one-liners
‘The wet air was as cold as the ashes of love.’
‘One of the women had enough ice on her to cool the Mojave Dessert and enough make-up to paint a steam yacht… The men with them looked grey and tired, probably from signing checks.
‘I’m an occasional drinker, the kind of guy who goes out for a bear and wakes up in Singapore with a full beard.’
Over zijn vrouw Cissy:
‘She was the beat of my heart for thirty years. She was the music heard faintly at the edge of sound. It was my great and now useless regret that I never wrote anything really worth her attention, no book that I could dedicate to her. I planned it. I thought of it, but I never wrote it. Perhaps I couldn’t have written it… I regarded the sacrifice of several years of a rather insignificant literary career as a small price to pay, if I could make her smile a few times more.’
‘I suppose that a man who was married for almost 31 years to a woman he adored becomes in a sense a lover of all women, and is forever seeking, even though he does not know it, for something he has lost.’
